Where the texts come from
The patient information leaflets (PIL) and the Summaries of Product Characteristics (SPC) are the texts the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) publishes for medicines licensed in the UK. A page with an MHRA text names the source, the product licence (PL) numbers and the date the text was last revised.
Some older pages show the English texts of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for medicines authorised in the European Union. They may differ from the current UK texts.
How we work with them
- We download the documents from the MHRA website.
- We convert the text into a web page and divide it into the sections of the original.
- We do not change, shorten or rewrite the text.
Facts about the medicines
The legal category (POM, P, GSL), controlled drug schedules, the black triangle, availability, packs, other strengths and forms and the medicines still supplied with the same active substance, strength and form come from the NHS Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dm+d), NHS Business Services Authority. We update them from every new dm+d release. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
