  • 1. What Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets are and what they are used for

Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets contain two active ingredients, magnesium trisilicate and hydrated aluminium oxide.

These are antacids which work by neutralising acid in yourstomach.

These tablets are used to treat dyspepsia (heartburn or indigestion) and reflux. They can also help to heal duodenal ulcers.

2. what you need to know before you take magnesium trisilicate tablets

Do not take Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets if:

  • You know you are allergic to magnesium trisilicate or aluminium oxide orto any of the other ingredients (these are listed in section 6)
  • You suffer from acute porphyria
  • You have a blood condition called hypophosphataemia (low concentraton of phosphate in the blood).

Check with your doctor before taking this medicine if:

  • You have kidney problems.

Other medicines and Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets

These tablets can affect some other medicines you may betaking, and they should not be taken at the same time of day as other medicines.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines including any you have bought yourself. Particularly any ofthe following:

  • guinidine (foran irregular orfast heartbeat)
  • ACE inhibitors (for high blood pressure)
  • salicylates eg. aspirin
  • atazanavirorti­pranavir (for HIV infection)
  • azithromycin, isoniazid, itraconazole, ketoconazole, methenamine, nitrofurantoin, rifampicin, tetracyclines, cephalosporins or flouroquinolones (to treat infections)
  • lithium, sulpiride or phenothiazines (for depression or mental illness)
  • barbiturates (sedatives)
  • bisphosphonates (for osteoporosis)
  • proguanil (to prevent malaria), chloroguineor hydroxychloroquine (to prevent malaria or treat rheumatoid arthritis or lupus (SEE))
  • deflazacort (a corticosteroid to treat allergic or inflammatory conditions)
  • mycophenolate (to prevent organ rejection)
  • penicillamine (for rheumatoid arthritis)
  • digoxin (for heart failure or irregular heartbeat)
  • dipyridamole (to prevent blood clots)
  • eltrombopag (to treat blood disorder)
  • erloti ni b (to treat some types of ca ncer)
  • fexofenadine (an antihistamine)
  • gabapentin or phenytoin (to treat epilepsy or nerve pain)
  • lansoprazole (to treat ulcers)
  • levothyroxine (to treat a thyroid problem)
  • rosuvastatin (for high cholesterol)
  • ulipristal (an emergency contraception)
  • sodium or calcium polystyrene sulfate (to treat high levels of potassium in the blood)
  • iron preparations (to treat or prevent anaemia)
  • bile acids.

3. How to take Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets

Suck or chew before swallowing.

Always take this medicine exaxtly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The usual recommended dose is:

Adults:

Suck or chew one or two tablets when required, usually between meals and at bedtime.

Do not take at the same time as other medicines.

Do not take more than the dose stated above.

If you continue to have the same symptoms, or if you

find that you need to take the tablets frequently, go and see your doctor.

Children should not take these tablets.

If you take more tablets than you should

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist straightaway.

4. Possible side effects

Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets are suitable for most people if they are taken at the recommended dose, but, like all medicines they can sometimes cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Diarrnoea and belching have been reported.

Taken excessively over a long time this medicine may cause kidney stones.

Patients who have had stomach bypass operations or those who have kidney problems may experience hypermagnesaemia (an abnormally high level of magnesium in the blood). This can lead to muscle weakness, low blood pressure, changes in heart beat, drowsiness or confusion. In severe cases it may be very difficult to breath and the heart rate may slow.

5. How to store Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets

Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not store above 25°C. Store in the original container.

Do not use the tablets after the expiry date shown on the label.

Take any left over back to your pharmacist to be destroyed. Do not throw away any medicine via waste water or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets contain

Each tablet contains 250 mg magnesium trisilicate and 120 mg hydrated aluminium oxide as the active ingredients. The other ingredients are sucrose, lactose, pregelatinised maize starch, potato starch, stearic acid and peppermint oil.
