1. What Hydventia ® Tablets are and what they are used for
Hydventia® Tablets contain an active ingredient called hydrocortisone. This belongs to a group of medicines called steroids. Their full name is corticosteroids. These medicines are used to replace the adrenal hormones in your body, which may be lacking.
These corticosteroids occur naturally in the body, and help to maintain health and well-being. Boosting your body with extra corticosteroid (such as Hydventia® Tablets) is an effective way to treat various illnesses involving inflammation in the body. Hydventia® Tablets reduce this inflammation, which could otherwise go on making your condition worse. You must take this medicine regularly to get maximum benefit from it.
Hydventia® Tablets are used:
- As replacement therapy for children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia which affects your body’s natural production of steroids.
- To treat severe asthma and allergic reactions in adults and children.
2. what you need to know before you take hydventia® tablets
Do not take Hydventia ® Tablets if:
- you are allergic to hydrocortisone or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- you have an infection, especially thrush, candida or any other fungal infection;
- you have been vaccinated recently or are going to have any vaccinations.
If you are not sure talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Hydventia® Tablets.
Warnings and Precautions:
Talk to your doctor before taking Hydventia® Tablets if:
- you have ever had severe depression or manic-depression (bipolar disorder). This includes having had symptoms of depression in the past while taking steroid medicines like Hydventia® Tablets;
- any of your close family has had these illnesses.
Also, check with your doctor before taking this medicine if you have had any of the following:
- you have recently had heart problems including heart attacks;
- you have tuberculosis (TB);
- you have liver problems;
- you have kidney problems;
- you have high blood pressure;
- you have diabetes (or a family history of diabetes);
- you have thinning of the bones (osteoporosis);
- you have glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) or a family history of the condition;
- you have epilepsy;
- you have stomach ulcers or other digestive problems;
- you have had muscle weakness after taking steroids in the past;
- you have a type of muscle weakening problem called ‘myasthenia gravis';
- you have an existing or previous history of severe mood-related disorders;
- you have thyroid problems;
- you have metastatic carcinoma (cancer that has spread from one part of the body to another);
- you have chicken pox, shingles or measles;
- you have exanthematous disease (disease affecting the skin, rash);
- you have thrombophlebitis (swelling and redness along a vein which is extremely tender when touched);
- you have a herpes infection in the eye called ocular herpes simplex;
- you have an HIV infection;
- you have recently visited a tropical country;
- you have amoebic dysentery and an infestation of a gut worm (strongyloidiasis), it may be activated or become worse
- you have bowel problems such as ulcerative colitis.
Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances.
You should see your doctor if you develop any new infections whilst taking these tablets. Taking hydrocortisone for extended periods of time increases the chance that you will get an infection. These may be worse than normal and may very rarely be fatal.
If you are taking or have taken Hydventia®Tablets within the last 3 months and you become ill, (particularly important in cases of gastroenteritis or----
vomiting/diarrhoea), suffer stress, get injured or are about to have a surgical procedure you must tell your doctor immediately that you have undergone treatment with Hydventia®Tablets as your dose may need to be increased (or you may have to start taking it again for a short period) to prevent a sharp fall in blood pressure.
If for any other reason your general health is declining although you take your medicine as prescribed; seek medical advice immediately.
Particular care should be taken by patients on long-term treatment as there is an increased risk of side effects.
If you have been on Hydventia®Tablets for longer than 3 weeks and wish to stop taking them, do not stop suddenly as this could result in a severe drop in blood pressure which could be fatal.Your doctor will advise on how to reduce the number of tablets you are taking.
It is important to avoid exposure to people who have chicken-pox, measles or shingles , especially if you have not already had these illnesses or are not sure if you have had them. Hydrocortisone increases the risk of a severe bout of chicken-pox. If exposed you must contact your doctor immediately.
Children
If the patient is a child, it is important that the doctor monitors growth and development at intervals during treatment. If hydrocortisone is given to a prematurely born baby, monitoring of heart function may be needed.
Elderly
Hydventia®Tablets should be used with caution in the elderly as side effects can be more pronounced in this age group.
Mental Health Problems while taking Hydventia ® Tablets
- Mental health problems can occur while taking steroids like hydrocortisone (see also section 4). These illnesses can be severe.
- Usually they start within a few days or weeks of starting the medicine.
- They are more likely to happen at high doses.
- Most of these problems go away if the dose is lowered or the medicine is stopped.
However, if problems do occur they might need treatment.
Talk to a doctor if you (or someone taking this medicine), shows any signs of mental health problems.This is particularly important if you are depressed, or might be thinking about suicide. In a few cases, mental health problems have happened when doses are being lowered or stopped altogether.
Important – Steroid Treatment Card
All patients taking steroids for more than 3 weeks should carry a ‘Steroid Treatment Card’ , which is available from your doctor or pharmacist. These cards have details of the medicine you are taking. Always keep it with you and show it to any doctor or nurse treating you.
