1. what gattart is and what it is used for
Gattart is a mint flavour antacid tablet which neutralizes stomach acid in the body.
Gattart is used for the treatment of heartburn and associated symptoms, e.g. stomach complaints and acid regurgitation.
You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.
2. what you need to know before you take gattart
Do not take Gattart:
-
– If you are allergic to calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
-
– If you have high calcium or low phosphate levels in the blood.
-
– If you have high calcium in the urine or kidney stones.
-
– If you have severe kidney disease.
If you are not sure if any of the above apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Warnings and precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine:
-
– if you have mild or moderate kidney problems as regular blood tests should be carried out.
Do not exceed the stated dose and do not take this medicine for more than 7 days without consulting a doctor. As with other antacid products, taking these tablets can mask the symptoms of other, more serious, underlying medical conditions, so avoid prolonged use of this medicine.
Children and adolescents
This medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
Other medicines and Gattart
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
If you are taking any of the following medicines speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Gattart because it can affect how these medicines work:

– Tetracyclines and quinolones (antibiotics)

– Levothyroxine (a thyroid hormone)
-
– Eltrombopag (used to increase the number of platelets)
-
– Digoxin (used for some heart conditions)
-
– Thiazide diuretics (water tablets to treat fluid retention and high blood pressure)
-
– Fluorides (for preventing dental caries)
-
– Phosphates (for clearing the bowel before a surgical procedure)
-
– Iron supplements
To maximise the benefit of all medicines being used, take Gattart at least 4 hours before or after taking eltrombopag [used to increase production of platelets (blood-clotting cells) in your body] and 1 to 2 hours after taking any other medicines.
Gattart with food and drink
Avoid taking this medicine with a large amount of milk or dairy products.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility
These tablets can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding if taken as instructed.
3. how to take gattart
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The recommended dose is:
Adults and adolescents (over 12 years): 1–2 tablets to be sucked or chewed, in case of heartburn and associated symptoms (listed in section 1), preferably 1 hour after meals and before bedtime.
Do not take more than 11 tablets a day.
You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days. Avoid prolonged use of this medicine.
Use in children and adolescents
This medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
If you take more Gattart than you should
Drink plenty of water and consult your doctor or pharmacist. Symptoms of an overdose include nausea and vomiting, constipation and muscular weakness.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Side effects are unlikely at the recommended dose. If you experience the following side effects stop treatment and immediatelly seek medical advice.
Rarely allergic reactions to the ingredients of this medicine have been reported, e.g. rashes, itching, difficulty in breathing and swelling of the face, mouth or throat and anaphylactic shock (anaphylactic shock is a severe sudden allergic reaction, symptoms of which are low blood pressure, shock, palpitations, difficulty in breathing, bronchospasm, skin reactions, abdominal pain or cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea).
Long term use of high doses can cause high blood levels of calcium and magnesium especially in people with kidney conditions. Symptoms of this may include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhoea, tiredness, muscular weakness, headache, kidney problems and impaired sense of taste. In exceptional cases, long term use of high doses can lead to milk alkali syndrome, which can cause high blood levels of calcium.

5. how to store gattart
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Store in the original package in order to protect from moisture. This medicinal product does not require any special temperature storage conditions.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

What Gattart contains

– The active substances are calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, heavy.
Each chewable tablet contains 680 mg calcium carbonate and 80 mg magnesium carbonate, heavy.

– The other ingredients are: silica, colloidal anhydrous; starch, pregelatinised; copovidone; xylitol (E 967); low-substituted hydroxypropylcellulose LH-11; spearmint flavour SD (flavouring preparation(s); natural flavouring substance(s) – pulegone, menthofuran; maltodextrin and gum arabic (E 414)); menthol L flavour spraydried (flavouring substance(s); gum arabic (E 414)); talc and magnesium stearate.
What Gattart looks like and contents of the pack
Gattart chewable tablets are square, white to almost white, biconcave tablets with rounded corners. The dimensions of the tablets are: length 15 mm, breadth 15 mm and thickness 3.9 – 4.3 mm.The tablets are packed in push-through PVC/PVDC/Al blister, each contains 8 tablets.
The cardboard box contains 16, 24, 48 or 96 chewable tablets and a leaflet inside.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
